What is the SIA?
The Security Industry Authority is the government body that licenses people working in private security in the UK. You must hold the right SIA licence before you can work in a licensed security role.
How old do I need to be?
You must be 18 or over to hold an SIA licence.
Is there an English requirement?
Yes. Security staff must be able to communicate clearly in English, so there is a short English check before your course starts.
Which licence should I get first?
For most people it is the Door Supervisor licence, because it also lets you work as a security guard. If you only want site based work, the Security Officer course is shorter.
Do I need first aid before my course?
For door supervisor and security officer courses, yes. You need an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate with at least 12 months left on it. Close protection needs a Level 3 first aid qualification.
How much does an SIA licence cost?
The SIA licence fee is £204 and a licence lasts three years. It is paid to the SIA, separately from your course fee.
Can I do the whole course online?
No. Part of the course can be studied online before you attend, but practical training and exams take place at the centre.
What happens if I fail an exam?
Your tutor will talk you through what went wrong and arrange a resit. Ask us about resit arrangements when you book.
Can a criminal record stop me getting a licence?
It depends on the offence and how long ago it happened. The SIA publishes its criteria on its website. If you are unsure, check before booking a course.
Are the SIA qualifications changing?
The SIA is reviewing its training standards, with new qualifications expected later in 2027. Qualifications you gain now remain valid for your licence application.
